Lesbian Date? School cancels prom instead

Constance McMillen a 18 year old girl from Northern Mississippi got her schools prom canceled by making one request, that she could go with her Girlfriend and wear a tux. The school district which has a rule that dates must be of opposite sexes denied the request which brought a challenge from Mississippi’s ACLU challenging that treating Constance different was a violation of her constitutional rights, as a result the school decided to cancel prom instead of just letting the couple come to the pinnacle of High School Social Life.

The extent to which people will go to discriminate against the LGBT community is amazing to me, rather than let one lesbian couple come to the Prom they stop it making it so a whole high school class will miss one of the most beloved traditions of high school their Senior Prom. Undoubtedly further isolating this girl from her classmate who are most likely going to blame her rather than the scum bags at the school district who really should be blamed.

Jesus Camp

Last night I watched a documentary called Jesus Camp. The documentary exposed how the evangelical, born again, Christian right in the United States is brainwashing children and a the process by which they do it , turning innocent youths into zombies, to ignore reason, and promote outdated beliefs turning back the progress which has been gained by the United States.

jesuscamp1

This movie is frightening as you see how children go from being sweet little innocent kids to being scared, and manipulated into becoming miniature religious extremists. Early in the movie on the first day of camp the pastor comes out and says that ‘god’ has told her that these kids are sinners and that they need admit there sins there in front of everyone. One little boy admits that while he has tried to believe in god, but when he reads the bible, prays, or goes to church he can’t help but not believe that god was real, despite wanting to. You can see the pain on his face as for the rest of the movie he is seen crying obviously torn on the inside knowing that god wasn’t real but feeling like a sinner, a denier of god the worst imaginable sin to a Christian,  This was one of the most painful parts of the movie to me I could feel his pain.

Another part of the movie that is terrifying is during one night at the camp a cardboard cut out of President George W. Bush, the children were then told what a great man he was, a man of god and were asked to pray for him, and thank god for him. The movie is also spliced with times where intimate conversations are had with the pastors in charge of the camp who wish for the children to fight and die for Jesus, and Christianity like fundamental Islamic terrorists, they seem to relish the possibility of a holy war between Muslims and Christian children, during one fiery speech the pastor tells the children that Muslim children are training with grenades from the age of 5, and asks them who wants to go and die for Jesus, at which point children practically jump out of their seats raising their hands

Jesus Camp is a horrifying movie that shows just how screwed this world is and how those on the right are manipulating innocent children turning them in to extremists that they hope one day will kill and die for Christ. This movie while horrifying is one that everyone should see, only so that they can see what is happening

Student suspended for his beliefs

A student in North Carolina was suspended from his public school for dressing as pirate earlier this week, only there was a twist. The Student is a member of a religion known as Pastafarianism, which believes that the flying Spaghetti Monster created all creation, i’m not joking I even wrote a post about it here.  In Pastafarianism pirates are seen as divine and by dressing as a pirate the young man was only being a faithful adherent to his religion.

Some may say that he is mocking religion and doesn’t deserve to have his ‘religion’ respected, however, Pastafarianism does have holy texts and empirical evidence that makes it at least as true as any other religion. Religion after all is just an illogical belief in the supernatural so why shouldn’t he get the same respect that others get?

All praises be  to the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Sarah Palin used Canadian Health Care

So apparently Saint Palin, Republican goddess, Fox News contributor extraordinary, Health Care reform fighter, who constantly preaches about the evils and horrors of universal, government ran health care, admitted in a speech given in Canada that she has crossed the border before to use Canada’s Single Payer Health Care system.

I guess Universal Health Care is only good when your stealing it from another nations tax payers.

Tobacco Tax

The Utah State legislature began this years session swearing to not raise any taxes this year, but it looks like they have changed their mind as they are likely to impose a new tax on Tobacco products which will raise the cost of Smoking by more than a dollar per pack. Reasons given justifying this new tax are it will help make up part of the budget shortfall and will encourage people to stop smoking.

While I’m not a smoker, and i’m not against the tax which will help lessen the blow to higher education in Utah, the legislatures decision to raise taxes on Tobacco bugs me. First they claimed not to raise tax, but they must of just meant on things that their faithful Mormon constituents  buy, the evil heathens who smoke aren’t included. Secondly this tax is attempting to fix peoples behavior by making it too expensive to continue their habit, which got me thinking if we are going to tax people to make them make a better choice then there is a host of things they could tax, raising much needed funds for the state, and improving the quality of life in Utah

  1. Soda and Sugary drinks- Obesity and diabetes are two of the leading killers in the United States, and cost tax payers huge sums of money, if we make buying soda too expensive to drink in large quantities then people will become more healthy, thiner, and less prone to diabetes
  2. Gasoline- Gasoline powers our cars which emit greenhouse gases which are causing global warming which threatens to fundamentally alter all life on earth, by making driving more expensive we can encourage carpooling, using mass transit, biking, as well as the purchase of cleaner more fuel efficient automobiles

Those are just two idea’s which could raise the State much needed funds and help to improve life in this here state

Earthquakes

Today there was an earthquake in Turkey, this brings the total number of  major earthquakes in the world up to 5 in the past few weeks with Haiti, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, and now Turkey all suffering quakes, Haiti the most destructive, and Chile the strongest. This is a little unsettling to me, as I live in Utah along the Wasatch Front a notorious (based upon geological records) fault line which is long over do to have a major earthquake which would undoubtedly cause great destruction, and could potentially displace the 2 million plus people who live along this front, lets hope we are spared

ACORN update

Remember when two young conservatives went into ACORN offices and made videotapes of them getting help dodging tax laws, and setting up a prostitution ring. Remember how as a result the group ACORN lost millions of dollars in funding, and the Democrats got a huge political black eye?

Well a lot has changed since then, the young man was arrested as I wrote about here , and Yesterday (March 4th) A Court ruled no wrong doing on the account of the ACORN officers after viewing a uncut un-spliced  videotape which was vastly different from the one used to condemn the group ACORN which was manipulated in such a way to portray the group very negatively

I still don’t agree with what the ACORN officers did if it was anything like what the video that got great publicity showed , but I think it’s impossible to deny that conclusions were jumped to way too quickly. I guess Innocent until proven guilty kind of got slighted here didn’t it?

And because she’s very attractive some photos of the young women who played the part of prostitute

GOP: Fear for fundraising

The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Republican party should be feeling a little ashamed today, as an official RNC document was obtained which showed that the GOP could exaggerate and create fear as a way of securing money through fundraising. The strategy was to get possible donors worked up over the claim Obama is a Socialist, the country is going down the drainThey even go so far as to depict Obama as Heath Ledgers Joker as seen in the following graphic, etc, etc…

gop-propaganda

Same old scare tactics that the Republicans have been using since before Obama was elected to scare the masses. Only now we have documented proof that this is a genuine GOP doctrine. Being the republicans they of course don’t feel sorry about any of this only embarrassment at actually getting caught, what more would you expect from a bunch of evil, racist, heartless, old men?

Bunning finally lets Senate help jobless

Rep Jim Bunning (R) Kentucky finally gave up on a stall tactic he had been using, to allow the US Senate to vote on a $10 billion dollar bill which increases the amount of time that jobless Americans can receive unemployment benefits, allowing American citizens to be able to take care of their families longer as they struggle to find work in the still struggling economy. The bill passed 78-19 and is expected to be signed into law Today by the president so the benefits can begin taking effect tomorrow (Wednesday March 4), the passing of this bill will extend benefits to over 200,000 unemployed American’s this week alone, thats 200,000 family’s which will still have income.

The Stall tactic drew disapproval from both sides as Democrats sick of being on the Defensive on Health Care went after Bunning as did some Republicans including Susan Collins (R) Maine who said “he’s not hurting the party, he’s hurting the American People”
